Blog Post 8 for Jeremy Goble – Final Project

For my final multimedia project I am going to cover the recent research and conservation efforts being done by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, TX. I am going to film a video documentary with interviews from employees, volunteers, and hopefully Executive Director Susan Rieff on-camera. I will also get tons of photos and film of flowers, landscape, people, workers, critters (butterflies, bees, birds, turtles), as well as some old stock photos of Lady Bird Johnson to highlight how the center came into existence as well as its original mission. My 5 pages will be as follows:

Project #3 Topic:

kayak2For Project #3 I will be making a site about kayaking. With spring around the corner, this will give me an opportunity to get outside on my kayak more frequently to get some good photos and video to share on my page in addition to some general information about kayaks, where and how to buy them, and the best spots around central Texas to go kayaking.

Responsive Websites:

The Onion

TheOnion.com Mobile Site
TheOnion.com Mobile

The Onion has a very well and simply designed responsive website. The website maintains emphasis on the photo at the top of the page and compresses the articles beneath it as the page contracts on a large monitor. As the page expands the menu bar appears, followed by side-bars with videos and advertisements at maximum window size. The iPhone version of the website looks identical to the compressed version of the page which I found interesting. I am assuming once you reach a certain pixel width equal to that of the iPhone it takes on the same layout.

 Life Hacker

LifeHacker.com Mobile Site
LifeHacker.com Mobile

This is a pretty cool web page with all kinds of advice to make life more manageable with its life-hacks. The page has a cool menu bar with icons for different devices that disappears as the page shrinks. As the page shrinks further the headline article takes a more prominent position at the top of the page that looks just like the iPhone presentation of the website with a vertical layout of articles. The one consistency is the LH logo in the upper left corner on both devices in all sizes. Check out this website for some pretty cool ideas like how to make the best bacon possible: Bacon Hack.

This website is awesome, but I might be biased because of how much I love the show! The colors pop, there is a cohesive layout, and it is funny. The links are in cool fonts that look like highlighted crayon when you scroll over them. There is easy navigation to their music and video pages along with tour dates. I like this websites simplicity and how well it captures the playful nature of the show “The Flight of the Conchords.” Be sure to click on the “Ultra-High Fidelity Music Box” to pull up the music player and make the tape recorder dance. Very interesting way to present music on a website, I would like to learn how to do this. Pretty sure it is a flash feature. They also have a “Chords & Lyrics” page which I found really intriguing as a musician/songwriter/guitarist to learn their songs with ease.

Hilarity…

I really like Jack Johnson’s website. The sites elements are aligned well and the colors of the text contrasts well against the wood-grain background. This site also does well representing the mellow vibe of his music and lifestyle. I personally like the rustic wood style of the page as you can tell by my own website Jeremy-goble.com. I also like video box on the home screen so it is easy to see and hear his most recent material. I also like the Instagram photo slideshow on the home page as well. It allows for a lot of material to be viewed in a small, clean space.

I’ll admit it, I’m jealous!

Pretty wild compared to the entire possessions of a family from Bhutan out of the book “Material World: A Global Family Portrait

Website #3: http://walkingwallofwords.com/

This website belongs to a pretty cool experimental indie band called Neutral Milk Hotel. I like the style of art they used on the website, particularly the flying gramophone on the home page. There is a very simple four-page layout with a charity page that I thought was really cool. A portion of concert proceeds and one dollar from every box set will be donated to children in need. When you click on the page links they open on the bottom of the screen and add colors and images that contrast the grey vibe of the home page.

San Marcos Photos:

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to take my own photos in San Marcos for the blog project this week because I live in Austin. However, I did find some really great photos on the internet that capture my favorite places in San Marcos. The first picture is of the San Marcos River where I love to hang out and relax, along with everyone else in San Marcos some days. There are few places I enjoy more than the river on a quiet day.

The second photo is of one of my favorite music venues in San Marcos, Cheatham Street Warehouse. This place has a ton of history with some incredible Americana musicians stopping in for shows frequently, including one of my old songwriting teachers Will Sexton who I saw play there several times.

The last picture is of another place I frequent in San Marcos, Tantra Coffeehouse. This place has some lively music in the evenings; my favorite is bluegrass nights. One of the most impressive young singer/songwriters I’ve seen in the past few years named Grace Park used to work at Tantra (she still might). She is currently playing gigs in Central Texas with a group called Grace Park & the Deer. I highly recommend you check out their music or go to a show if you see their name on a poster around San Marcos.

Blog Post 3: Twitter Experience

I have used Twitter many times before this class but had taken a bit of a hiatus so it is nice to get back into it. I really like the immediacy of news and updates on Twitter and the ability to customize your feed based on who you are following and what the site decides for you to see. I like using Twitter to stay current on what concerts and events are going on around Austin, promoting my music, and networking with likeminded people.

I have used the Twitter app on my phone in the past when I was in Fundamentals of Digital and Online Media with Jon Zmikly, but did not use it for this exercise. I recognize the benefits of being connected at all times, but sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed by the constant Facebook and Twitter updates on my phone so I keep it all on my computer (which I’m on several hours a day anyways).

This is a link to a cool image I found on Twitter about why everyone is moving to Austin: “Why Everyone is Moving to Austin”

Also, feel free to check out my webpage now that it is up and running at: Jeremy-Goble.com

Blog Post 2: History of the Internet

History of the Internet-Ethan Zuckerman

I found this video very interesting in how the Internet evolved as a means of communication because that is what people used it for. I got a kick out of Zuckerman’s joke that the guys at BBN are the actual inventors of the Internet, not Al Gore. I really enjoy hearing Ethan Zuckerman speak because he is so knowledgeable about the Internet and is a strong advocate for net neutrality.

Nerds 2.0.1-Timeline

It is fascinating to me, and not at all shocking, that the Internet as we know it today exists because of technologies developed during the arms race between the United States and the U.S.S.R. Since the launch of the Sputnik satellite by the Russians, new advancements in technology appear to be a bi-annual occurrence spearheading in the Internet we use and rely on today.

The Internet a Decade Later

It seems like a lifetime ago that I was waiting for my dialup modem to connect to AOL so I could AIM (instant message) all my friends on the Internet. I also remember the excitement of downloading any CD my heart desired on Napster without fear of punishment, until Lars Ulrich and Metallica put an end to that. Now we have iTunes Store though and can legitimately purchase all our entertainment needs at the touch of a button. I can’t wait to see what the next decade has in store for the Internet.

The First Website

Seeing the First Website really shows me how far we have come in a short time from having what is now basic HTML code with simple text and hyperlinks as main features of the website, to now having intricate designs, graphics, and functions on our websites today.

The Evolution of the Web

What a fascinating way to deliver a timeline! Stunning visuals, interactive links, and a very simple yet elegant design is a fitting example way to deliver the evolution of the Web in a way that maximizes its current capabilities.

How Search Engines Work

Search engines are incredibly powerful tools to find what we’re looking for in a flash. “Spiders” get sent out all across the internet to pick and choose bits of data that apply to our search topics and then gather them in an orderly fashion so we can narrow down our search from a much more customized list of options instead of spending valuable time aimlessly searching for information on the net.

Get More out of Google

Google is a truly amazing company in the media/technology world. Arguably the most popular search engine on the web, I’m glad to now know some of the shortcuts and techniques provided by Google to find exactly what I’m looking for. It is also handy in that it can function as a dictionary, calculator, concierge, and much more.

Twitter:

I decided to follow KUTX Austin on Twitter because I hope to land an internship with them this Summer and following them will keep me posted on events I can get involved with at KUTX. I also followed Blizzard Entertainment because they have a headquarters in my hometown of Austin, TX where they produce video games. I am interested in the production side of the video game world and would be interested in working for them after college. Lastly, I followed an Austin company called Set.fm (or DejaSet) which is a really cool startup company that records live music shows in cooperation with local bands around Austin, then mixes them and posts a downloadable digital mp3 of the live show. This allows fans to attend a concert of a band they like, then buy a copy of that exact show 24 hours later to put have on iTunes as a live CD. I am considering applying for an internship with Set.fm as well. Pretty cool stuff.

Blog Post 1: Jeremy’s Bio

Hello classmates, my name is Jeremy Goble, and I am a senior Electronic Media major minoring  in Music. I currently work five nights a week for the University of Texas Longhorn football team which has been very exciting lately with the hiring of a new head coach. However, the one thing you should know about me it is that I love to play, write, perform and listen to music.

I have been playing guitar and piano for over fifteen years now and have been producing my own original music in my home studio since 2004. In 2008 I attended the Austin Live Music Academy at the University of Texas where I took classes in music theory, live performance, composition, audio production, music business and private lessons. This was an invaluable experience for me as an aspiring professional songwriter and producer, but I still had a desire to earn my Bachelor’s degree which led me to Texas State University.
